These projects are designed to combine luxurious comfort with health and fitness activities of all kinds. They are marketed to the aging baby boomers who want to age in style. And can afford to. This is not your grandmother’s retirement home.

Pilates classes, Cardio dancing (isn’t all dancing cardio?), Aqua aerobics, scented rooftop gardens for meditation, nutrition classes, massage, self-defense classes (to handle unwanted massages), tantra classes (you should see the homework) are all part of the “balanced lifestyle” package. You won’t find any Snickers bars or Twinkies in their vending machines.
The two big players are Canyon Ranch (Miami Beach, Chicago) and Miraval Living (NYC).
