Blog Predictions for 2007: The Good, The Bad, & The Blibel

predictions-for-2007.jpg
Want to know the state of the blogos in 2007? We have no idea but this is what a Times Square fortune teller told us:

1. Every website will have a blog. After hearing this, we demanded our money back. The reply came swiftly, “It’s just a starting point.”

2. Every currently active blog will have advertising of one form or another. The most popular reason will be to cover the cost of hosting. Some bloggers will only give their blessings to Amazon, until 2008, when they too will cave, upon pressure from their spouses.

3. As a result of 2 (and some meaningful dough), some blog contributors will demand compensation, which will include a cut of the ad revenue for their part in building the owner’s blog brand and traffic. At least one contributor will threaten to leave, taking all their posts with them, to which the blog owner will respond, “Sorry, all the blog content, and ad money, belong to me because it’s my blog”. Insults and blogsuits will follow. Hey, no one said the future would be a bed of roses.

4. As a result of 3, Blog Contributor contracts will be de rigueur. A percentage of ad money will become standard and the top contributors will negotiate the best rates. Blog owners will demand contributor exclusivity and not get it.

5. As a result of 4, Professional Blog Post Contributor will be a viable job description. Personal RSS feeds of their work on various blogs will be available.

6. Every blogger will join MyBlogLog, which will become the MySpace of blogging.

7. Larry Cragun’s Darling Dozen prediction will come true.

8. “Blibel” will become a meme after someone wins a libel lawsuit against a blogger.

9. There will be a reality show based on blogging.

10. When you ask the question “Do you read any blogs?”, the answer you are most likely to hear will be “I’ve heard of blogs but I’m not really sure what they do”.

Bonus Prediction: Because of pressure from poor typists, the blogosphere will become the blogos.

  • I couldn't agree more with the predictions; in fact I just got contacted yesterday regarding a trademark infringement ... you know once the lawyers get involved it's the real world.
  • Do you guys have a seer stone?
  • Ya-but
"As a result of 3, Blog Contributor contracts will be de rigueur."

Any known samples of this legal instrument out there??? Somebody get me a bleeping, blogging lawyer please (@*#!).
  • Great post, interesting predictions, lets just hope that they don't all come true. :)
  • Not sure the advertising angle will pan out. I just removed all the advertising from my blog.
  • We're working on it. Thanks for giving us the whole year to get everyone corralled. :)
  • Athol,

When we started, we saw virtually no ads on the real estate blogs. (They were on many of the other blogs though)

Slowly, the ads are creeping in, beginning with Amazon. Promoting books is a good thing we all agree. But Google adsense is also starting to appear. And we're starting to see ads on the feeds. We believe bloggers will be tempted to try ads, at least to offset some of the cost/time of blogging. We've been running an experiment with ads on the site (as you can tell) and are going to reveal the results soon.

Athol, why did you put want to put ads on your blog? And why did you remove them?

    Teresa,
Hmmm...Which predictions don't you want to see come true?
  • Lovely! However, predictions sure sound bloody chaotic in the blogos. Anyway, I'm preparing to pack and go anytime it goes ugly. :)
  • You know how predictions go. The fortune teller's ball was a little cloudy anyway. Hopefully, it will never get that ugly that you leave ipanema.
  • I thought that the reality show about blogging was a joke but seeing the big brother in Second Life, i think that is very probably a tv-show about blogging.

By the way, i add one prediction: a migration of blogging to vlogging. Maybe it is not a complete migration but each day there are more embedded videos in blogs (from YouTube, Metacafe,...).
