Top 12 Women Real Estate Bloggers 2009

top 12 women

Sellsius’ 4th Annual Top 12 Women Real Estate Bloggers for 2009 were chosen for at least a year of blogging (some have many years), pushing the envelope, using video, and other things of more import, to me– community service, charity, and education– sharing beyond the written word.  Many I have met. Others I hope to meet.

About the Sellsius Top 12.

When Rudy and I created the list in 2006, we meant for it to raise awareness of women real estate bloggers (whom we love)– and to inspire others to blog.  Although we know of women who are perennial all-stars, we decided not to make repeat selections. We wanted the list to grow with new women every year.  If you think a blogger you admire was overlooked, she may be on a prior list… or a future list.

2006

2007

2008

[Certainly, there are great women bloggers I have overlooked.  Mea culpa.  Hopefully, they will be added in the future. (mention them in the comments).]

UPDATE: Steve Jagger offered each woman a free Ubertor Video Focused Website for one year.  Just contact Steve at:  sjagger at ubertor.com  (thanks Steve, and Ubertor)

The Top 12 Women Real Estate Bloggers for 2009 are:

colleen kulikowski

1. Colleen Kulikowski. BuffaloRealEstateNews.  I love Colleen’s blogging style. Her blog reads like a newspaper/magazine.  Her posts are easy on the eyes, extremely relevant to her market,  and display her sense of humor .  She writes appealing headlines and uses catchy images.  Colleen is a force on Active Rain.  She is very tech savvy. She is using her SEO skills to rule the Buffalo market— her blog is on page 1 of Google for “Buffalo homes for sale”— ahead of Zillow and Realtor.com.  Now that’s how Colleen rocks blogging.   For those who think blogging has little ROI, talk to Colleen and learn a thing or twenty-two.

mary pope handy

2. Mary Pope-Handy. Mary authors 3 blogs: The Valley of Heart’s Delight; Live in Los Gatos; and the quite deadly Haunted Real Estate Blog. Mary was the Winner of the Project Blogger Contest, sponsored by Inman News and Active Rain back in 2007. Her mentor was Frances Flynn Thorsen, a celebrated blogger (with a big heart). Mary is a fantastic writer. She co-authored the book “Get The Best Deal When Selling Your Home In Silicon Valley”. Mary is a Realtor in Silicon Valley and “lives on the cutting edge of real estate technology, high tech gadgets…. and a huge Patriots fan.”

dru bloomfield

3. Dru Bloomfield. AtHomeInScottsdale. Dru is an excellent writer. She has been blogging about the Scottsdale area since 2007.  Her consumer focused posts are easy to read and offer useful stats (via our pals at Altos Research). She chooses great images too.  Dru is Communications Director for the Special Education Parents Advisory Council of Scottsdale, on the Scottsdale Area Association of Realtors and the Arizona Regional MLS Committees, and also as Treasurer of the Scottsdale Sandpiper Home Owners’ Association.  Dru also does volunteer work in special education and technology in her community.

diane twitterqueen

4. Diane Guercio. a/k/a HeyAmaretto.  Diane is intelligent, artistic and wildly witty.  It’s her witty (or is it the wild?) side I find entertaining (or maybe it’s her grand laugh).  Diane uses blogging and social media to increase business and build her brand .  She is also a teacher of the mysterious blogging/SM arts .  Diane is one of the founders of the TwitterQueens group (also open to twitter fellas) and is involved in charitable work, MFFO (Mothers Fighting for Others).  Stalk Diane here.

amy chorew

5. Amy Chorew. The  TechByteTheDigitalRealtor/ActiveRain.  Amy also writes for AgentGenius.  A REALTOR® since 1981, Amy is a national speaker, trainer and teacher–  over 15 years.  She has delivered more than 500 seminars  in more than 30 states.  Amy blogs to educate real estate agents on tech tools and social media in order to close the gap between what consumers need and what real estate agents provide.    Amy is a charismatic speaker, with a wonderful sense of humor. Having spent time on a panel with her, I can attest to Amy’s communications skills– and her entertaining style.

kaye thoMAS

6. Kaye Thomas. ManhattanBeachRealty. Beach City Real Estate. Move2Manhattan Beach. Kaye is a real estate veteran, serving the South Bay communities of Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach and El Segundo since 1979.  She specializes in luxury oceanfront homes. Kaye has been blogging for ages– I think about 5 years. And she is well loved, even by the bubble bloggers (so I was told). Kaye also blogs on Active Rain. When I met Kaye in California, I was impressed by her wisdom and charm.  An inspiration.

jessica riffle photo blogger

7. Jessica Riffle Edwards. CarolinasFinest/HotPropertyBlog . Jessica is a video blogger in Wilmington, North Carolina.   She is the first exclusive video blogger to make the list.  I applaud her consistent work in this medium.  She’s not a veteran, but an upstart. Watch her videos and you’ll get a sense of her passion for her profession— AND clients. Jessica has been video blogging for a year— from her car!  Amazing.  She’s recently married— so maybe her hubbie will hold the camera for her.

susie

8. Susie BlackmonBucking The Real Estate Trend. Susie is a western North Carolina Broker-Owner and Realtor who loves horse property, photography, marketing, and technology.   She  blogs and uses other social media to share local information, real estate market reports, plenty of photos and videos.   She also has a Horsealicious photoblog. As much as Susie likes being online, she loves being offline too. She  loves “horses, Cowboys (with boots), rodeos, and Airstreams.”  Susie was recently named one of the 2009 Top 25 Most Connected Real Estate Professionals.  I discovered Susie on Twitter.  She is very, very tech savvy and a wonderful photographer.  She is very good about sharing anything she has learned.

elaine reese

9.  Elaine Reese. Central Ohio Real Estate News. Another veteran blogger (since 2006), Elaine uses her 18 years experience in marketing to great effect on her blog. In 2007, she won the 1st Place Web Site Award in the OAR Advertising & Promotion Contest.  She has lived 40 years in the Columbus metro.  I have always admired Elaine and her Reese’s Pieces contributions to the industry. She is a high caliber expert in her market– heck, even  ABC News has to ask Elaine about selling tips.  (Plus, I love her Murph.)

gena riede

10. Genea (Gena) Riede. Sacramento Real Estate Voice. Gena has been blogging since 2006.  A Californian for 31 years, she’s the broker of her own firm and Certified Distressed Property Expert  in Sacramento, California.  I like the look of Gena’s blog and her writing style.  And I like Gena as a person.  Gena is adventurous and is now doing video blogging ( from her car)– sharing tips and doing neighborhood tours, which I think are great.  Each month she answers questions posed by buyers, sellers and homeowners.

kim wood

11. Kim Wood. West of Philly BurbsActiveRain blog. Part of the TechByte team. Kim’s Flickr Cester County Photostream.   Kim has been blogging since 2008 and she has really taken off this year.  I see her everywhere– online and off.  No wonder– as she says, “I eat, live, and breathe Real Estate.”   I really enjoy her use of photographs and images to enhance her writing.  I’m a fan.  Having met her, I was wowed by her energy and passion.  Her smile is a knockout.

monika mcgillicuddy

12. Monika McGillicuddy.   New Hampshire Real Estate Blog. Monica also has a delightful photo blog, The New Hampshire View Finder.   I am partial to real estate bloggers who use images.  Monika has been in the business in New Hampshire since 1984 and has been blogging since 2006.  She is another educator. As a member of REEA (Real Estate Educators Association), Monika offers classes approved for CE credit by the NH Real Estate Commission.

My thanks to all these fine women for sharing themselves with others– online and offline.  If you want guidance in the blogging arts, reach out to them.

Are you for real w/ that question? I don't mean to be aggressive, so excuse me, but I have to sit and watch a bunch of douchebags/gurus/snakeoil salesmen give real estate agents advice day in and dayout- who have never sold one piece of property in their life.

Why don't we use your metric to decide who gets to give real estate agents training/ advice/tutorials.

Additionally, I would like your metric used for agents who are on panels at real estate conferences as well.

It doesn't seem like anyone cares whether or not the "speakers" are vetted/successful agents. Many agents/speakers on the "circuit" or in SM labeled as "rockstars" are completely not qualifed, per your metric, to be up on ANY stage.
  • Joe, You know I'm grateful to be included on this list. I was touched and honored to end the year on yet another high note! Thank you.

Also, I have so enjoyed reading and learning from the other bloggers on this and prior year's lists. Thanks to you all for being such good teachers!

Name, I have spent the last several days, pondering how to respond to your comment. Valid questions, but also only one side of the equation. I'll touch on a few points and invite you to contact me, as I'm more than willing to share specifics off-line.

My business has continued to grow since I started blogging, and the past two years have been strong growth years for me, with my gross income increasing 24% in 2008 and 17% in 2009. The on-going growth is not totally due to my blogging or involvement in social media, but these activities have made a huge impact in the credibility and confidence I bring to the table when I meet with clients who have not yet connected with me on-line. I now find myself in non-real estate gatherings, where people know who I am when I walk in the door. I've had some fabulous press opportunities as a result of my blogging and twittering. My sunrise photos have been featured on the morning news. This type of recognition would not have happened without blogging, facebooking, or twittering. And the value of that press (major league third party validation) is huge.

I'm a numbers geek (although you can't tell it by my recent blog posts), so if you want some justification or validation, call or email. Just know, I'm a glass half-full kind of person! :-)
  • Congratulations to all 12 of you! It's great to see some of my blogging friends on the list - and for those I don't know, I'll be following your posts to get to know you as well. As the list grows each year, maybe we should have a club of all of us who've been named over the years.
  • Congratulations! You deserve the recognition and a standing ovation!
  • Congratulations to all of this year's Ladies of the Blog. I think it is super-awesome that every age group is represented, proving once again that women never get older...they just get better!

    Kudos to all.
  • CONGRATULATIONS LADIES!!! What an amazing group!! Being included in the top 12 is a great honor and I totally dig every single pick here. Joe, as always, you are da' bomb!
  • Diane aka @HeyAmaretto,

I knew there was a good reason why I liked your writing, Twits and whit. Congrats to you and your fellow Top 12 Bloggers !

    Happy Holidays,

    :) Steven aka @StevesGulf_com

A great list - congratulations to these outstanding women in real estate!
  • missycaulk
I love you do this. Congratulations to all, awesome selection for 2009!!
  • Sally
Production should be a key element in selecting someone for this distinction.
  • I do not demand it. You are free to honor only those that produce from their blogs, but I suspect it is not easy to measure production. If writing posts or dealing with comments helps your communication skills, or research for a post teaches you something of value in your profession, and these skills help you get or keep clients and get referrals, do you say blogging has nothing to do with this? In many ways, blogging is about becoming a better professional and putting forth onto the web information that helps a person in some way, even one who doesn't hire you. Maybe their blog posts help other agents learn something and do better and help others, including consumers. Perhaps part of their blog production is knowledge and happiness, which is then shared with others. I guess I celebrate the communal good these women produce.
  • I would also like to respond to name's question. In 2005 I made the decision to learn about Internet marketing as it seemed the next logical place for local real estate marketing. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

I do a little print marketing because we have one local paper that is still a major real estate resource, but my business is now almost completely Internet based. It took about 16-18 months before I started to see good results which is about the same time as most traditional marketing methods.

I can truthfully say that Internet marketing and especially blogging has been a terrific resource for me. It takes time but the results have been well worth the effort. In a down market, blogging has allowed me to stay in touch with a large segment of my local real estate market that I might not have reached with traditional methods.

My business is real estate and that's what I blog about. I write about what buyers and sellers want to know about the local market. Real Estate is a numbers game... and the stronger you are in your local market the more opportunities you will have to meet people who want to buy or sell a home.

My focus is on my local South Bay-beach Cities market not the whole Los Angeles market. As with any marketing effort you get a direct return based on how consistent your efforts are over a long period of time. Blogging is a long term effort and not for folks who are looking for a quick return. I expect to see my business continue to increase each year as the market improves and my presence on the Internet gets stronger.
  • Kaye, I agree with a lot of what you said. Blogging is just one of the tools in our marketing tool box - it shouldn't be the only one, however. For me, it has proved to have a much better ROI than newspaper ads, which I have now dropped to minimal levels so I'm saving considerable money. Over the last couple years, blogging has helped me sell my listings faster and gain new listings. It has also made me a better informed agent. I do a lot of charts and graphs, so doing the research for that info makes me more market savvy which is a benefit to my clients.

I find it very easy to blog, so I'm sure I spend less time doing it than another agent might spend making phone calls or putting stamps on tiny calendars or JL/JS cards to secure business. We all choose the marketing program that works best for meeting our own objectives. For me, blogging is easy, cheap, fun, and delivering good results. Can't beat that!

I cleared it with Joe first, but I wanted to offer all 12 of you 1 year free on the Ubertor platform as a prize for winning this award. You are all fabulous bloggers and I though an Ubertor Video Focused Website would be in order. :)

    Congrats again!!
    Sincerely,
    Steve
  • Wow! Thank you for such a great gift!
  • Thank you Steve
  • Very good questions raised.

To me it has always been more than simple lead generation although that is a huge component. I spend a good amount of my time teaching other agents and volunteering as well as working as part of a real estate team with my husband. I can honestly tell you that blogging and social networking has had a positive impact on our business. When I started blogging in 2006 I had no idea what I was doing. It took about 9 months for me to really get going and to see my first successful transaction from it. Like Amy said...it takes time.

I love it when I meet new clients and customers for the first time. They feel and act like they know me and often they have already made the decision to work with me, before ever even meeting me, to me that is so sweet.

I love what I do and in my world... it works for me. I am so honored to be among those listed here.
  • I agree with Monika... Blogging is one part of the whole. Everything I do drives them to my site and my contact forms and calling me directly. I get s steady stream of leads from my efforts on the internet. I still get involved in community events, volunteer, teach others, send postcards, make phone calls, send mailings, door knock and get face to face with potential buyers and sellers. Like any marketing campaign it can take between 18 months - 2 years to really see results.
  • A special thank you to all the women who continue to blog (for whatever the reason), women I have missed because Fate did not cross our paths. I honor all of you nonetheless, as I believe blogging is a useful means for self-expression and reaching out to others, qualities I feel are necessary for life, as well as a profession. This is my small gift to these wonderful women, many of whom I have met, in appreciation of their hearts, beyond the written word.
  • johntuccillo
While all lists like this are clearly subjective, any one that omits Terri Murphy and Judith Lindenau is bogus.
  • You could have just suggested them for next years list without tearing down the women who made it this year.
  • Sellsius "Top 12 Women Bloggers" is one of my favorite lists of the year. Congrats to a great group of bloggers. The Sellsius group is a perfect place for new bloggers looking for examples a excellent real estate blogging. Congratulations to everyone on the list!

The first comment (Anonymous) asks some excellent questions. I'd urge that commenter to review reportage at Inman News following live panels at Inman Connect and Blogger Connect where successful real estate agents talk about the connection between their blogging efforts and connecting with real live consumers in transaction based relationships. That comment and question attached to it become more relevant as real estate agents engage at numerous social media platforms and spend increasing time and energy at Facebook and Twitter and other platforms.

Thanks for another great list of bloggers, Joe!
  • I admire these women for all their hard work, imagination and insight. Congratulations to all! Well deserved.

Kim Wood texted me and told me! Joe thanks! You made my day. As far as helping our businesses - it takes time like anything, but yes I have built my brand with my blog. • Name
Great list! What I would love to see (because unfortunately I think I know the results)....

What is the correlation between the best (and active) bloggers, and their business production (which of course, (I assume) is the reason these folks are blogging!

In my area, I have researched for years the business production of the most active and visible bloggers (one of which is on this list by the way), and I can say that I am underwhelmed each and every year. Their business is OK, but nothing exceptional by any means.

With the amount of effort and time that goes into being a regular blogger, is it really worth the effort? Granted, I'm sure some do it for the fun of it, which is fine. But most agents start blogging because they want/ think it will add to or help increase their business and market visibility. And honestly, I don't think the increase (if there even IS any) is anywhere proportionate to the amount of time and effort involved.

THAT I think is the real story that nobody is telling.....
  • I don't know their blog lead generation. My choices look at other things, like charity and education or devotion to the craft. One can also learn as a blogger - which can be used offline. Talk to Colleen about her blog lead gen.
  • John Reay
Massive action = Massive Results and Blogging just doesn't get the reading exposure that people think it does.
  • robhahn
Are you sure you're comparing apples to apples though?

Years of experience, avg. sales price, levels of education, etc. should probably be equalized first, no?

It would be interesting if you could control as much of these variables as possible and compare the active blogger who is in your area to someone who is as close to her as possible in every other way.
