How To Make $76,000 A Year From Blogging

No, it’s not from Google Adsense.

Just repeat after me, I am not a blogger, I am a weblog communications specialist. That’s the ticket to some decent money from Write on Metro, the (web)blog of the Harris County (Houston, TX) MTA. That’s right. A Write on Metro “weblog communication specialist” is paid $76,622 a year. In addition to the nifty salary and other benefits, she gets to ride the Metro for free.

Now I understand why people use the word weblog. It pays better. You think it’s easy weblogging for these folks? Read the job description on page 3 (benefits on page 2).

This salary information was obtained using the Freedom of Information Act. Link here.

Having lived in Houston for 3 years, I think that’s a sweet deal, when you throw in great chili, rodeos and the Cotton-Eyed Joe.

  • Nothing wrong with any of that Brian :)
  • and I thought I was just a nerdy guy with a computer and a problem with authority.
  • You could syndicate your work to other blogs in Minnesota, like a columnist. Or maybe send out a bi-weekly blogletter that goes to paid subscribers. It isn't that far-fetched.
  • Gee, capitalism is the best system ever created, to think a person could make money by writing a blog. I have to write a blog and then get paid when I sell real estate. Wow! I could cut out the real estate part and just do the blog?
  • If having a blog becomes a (perceived) "must" addition to a broker/agent website, there will be plently of jobs available for experienced real estate blog post writers.
  • If you had transportation like the Metro Rail in Ann Arbor you would feel it in your tax wallet. Light rail in Houston hasn't exactly been a an effective program. It's made driving and walking in downtown Houston interesting and in my opinion there isn't really a need for it. It doesn't surprise me that Metro is paying someone damn near 80K a year for this. You can pretty much double that for the total loaded expense of this gig. Wanna know how effective the blog is? I live in Houston and this is the first I've heard of it. Sheesh.
  • Too bad we don't have transportation like this in Ann Arbor. I'd apply for the job !! But, it is exciting !!
  • Geez... I'm asking for a raise.
  • You know what they say about Texas---everything is bigger there.
  • Can I write 3 and make $200K a year?
  • And, just how often does somebody have to post to get paid that amount of money? Several times a day? Weekly?

I think I'm in the wrong business.
