What Makes An Idea Stick?

What makes one idea stick and another fall off and die? A new book by Chip and Dan Heath offers an answer. Guy Kawasaki has high praise for Made to Stick. He calls it a must-read, in the league of The Tipping Point and Built to Last. Guy conducted a must-read interview with the authors on his blog. We highly recommend both.

In the interview, the authors discuss the SUCCES characteristics of sticky ideas, the Curse of Knowledge, the Cocktail Napkin Test and who is in the Stickiness Hall of Fame. Did you know the idea for Southwest Airlines was sketched on a cocktail napkin? It’s actually framed and hanging in the SA boardroom (along with the special sauce stains). How about the 28 year old General Mills employee who saved the world from 37 scientifically created flavors of Hamburger Helper?

  • I think the really sticky ideas are the ones that no one can think of. Then after the idea hits, it's like "well duh, everyone knows that".
