Snail Shell Living : Portable Home of the Day

We’ve covered all sorts of unusual housing concepts–styrofoam dome homes,  billboard houses, shipping container houses, rotating houses, conversions, floating houses, underwater habitats, off the grid mother earth ships,  tiny tumbleweeds, houses shaped like musical instruments, a stealth bomber, a flying saucer, even a toilet.  We even threw in the world’s highest house of cards.
Now, we [...]

Rotating House Follows the Sun

I confess a fascination with rotating architecture. I’ve found a few of them over the years (see posts below). And now this one — Heliotrope Rotating House– located in Frieburg Germany.
This environmentally friendly house was designed by the German architect Rolf Disch to follow the sun– like having a southern exposure from every [...]

Dome Home of Styrofoam

From coffee cup to house…. that’s progress for styrofoam.  A company in Japan has designed styrofoam dome houses to meet the country’s stringent building codes.
Called the “habitat for the 21st century,” the Dome House is constructed of 100% expanded polystyrene foam (styrofoam) that resists earthquakes and hurricanes.  It does not rot or rust and is [...]

Unusual House of the Day: Toilet House

Known as the Toilet House, this unusual building was designed by Sin Jae Duck to mark the launching of the World Toilet Association (he’s one of the head guys) .  Made of steel, white concrete and glass, it looks rather sanitary.  If you really need to go, it’s located in Seoul, Korea.

Flying Saucer Home: Futuro

The Futuro flying saucer home was created by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen during the 1960s. The first one was made in 1968 in Helsinki, Finland. Only 20 were made in Finland between 1968-1978. The manufacturing rights were sold for production of the unusual house in other countries. Less than 100 Futuros [...]

Unusual Home Conversions

Home conversions are creative adaptations of existing non-residential structures. Here are places that were called something else before they were called home.
Church conversions are very popular in the UK. This English chapel home has lovely windows and high ceilings. You pray the electric bills are not hell to bear.

From self-defense to self-expression, a [...]
