Dubai’s Revolving Building Will Not Be The World’s First

Imagine eating breakfast while watching the sun rise and having dinner overlooking a beautiful sunset. It will be possible in this 78 story revolving apartment building being built  in Dubai.  The Italian architects call it Dynamic Architecture (website here).  Each floor will be capable of revolving independently of the others.

The building is designed to be completely energy self-sufficient, using wind turbines positioned between each floor.  The skyscraper will be the first built entirely of prefabricated parts — each floor can be built in 7 days, claims architect Dr. David Fisher.  Plans are to build these amazing towers next in Moscow and New York City.

The architects claim its the world’s first moving building.   Not true.  Dubai is slightly behind the revolving building curve.  While it may be the world’s first “green” revolving building, it is not the first building in motion.

The Suite Vollard apartment building in Curitiba, Brazil (video here) was the first building in the world to spin its 15 floors.  Sorry Dr. Fisher

And let’s not overlook former Bell Labs employee Al Johnstone’s 360° spinning house in San Diego, California.  (website here)

I have been following the remarkable architectural goings-on in Dubai for a few years but this time they’re playing catch-up.

Thanks to Laurie Manny for the Dubai Revolving Tower tip.
