It was the largest cathedral in the world for over a thousand years. A masterpeice of Byzantine architecture, the original bulding was constructed in the 4th century and dedicated by Emperor Constantious (son of Emperor Constantine) in 360. It was rebuilt several times, once under Emperor Justinian I on December 27, 537. The impressive dome and forty windows allow a mystical light to illuminate the interior .
In 1453 it was converted to a mosque and minarets were built around its perimeter. The interior is decorated with exquisite Christian mosaics, now beautifully restored. Since 1935 it has been a museum. Can you name this building? It comes from the Greek and means Holy Wisdom?
I have been in this great building and it is awe-inspiring.
