Inflatable architecture is an interesting concept. Where needs are temporary, architecture should accommodate them. Kunst Werke (Berlin) housed an art exhibit and needed additional access. Swiss firm Instant Architecture created a temporary entrance, with stairs and balcony, that was extremely durable. After the structure was no longer needed, it was easily removed. The balcony cantilevered over the street. This added to the interest, especially at night (video here)
Historic and landmark buildings might find this approach useful. Not only would it save the building from construction compromise, it might also save time in getting permits from the Department of Buildings, which is I liken to Kafka’s Castle.
