NEV: Neighborhood Electric Vehicle

H3 by GM

The Neighborhood Electric Car (NEV) may be coming to your town soon.  These low speed electric cars (25-35 mph) are super energy efficient and practical for small towns and planned communities where the posted speed limits are 35-45 mph.  They are permitted in 40 states.  Planned communities like Celebration, Florida have NEV programs.

NEVs are equipped with three-point seat belts, windshields and wipers, headlights, brake lights, reflectors, rear view mirrors, and turn signals.  The driving range is about 30 miles before you need a recharge.

The high end HUMMER H3 pictured above costs about $15,000.

I have lived in Sun City CA since 2000. These type of vehicles are common here.
  • Are there any problems? Are people embracing their use?

Global Electric Motors , nicknamed GEM cars, are used widely in the resort town of Bay Harbor ,MI . They are fun, quiet and environmentally sound. Now they are beginning to pop up in South Carolina for use in many of the New Urban communities. They make a lot of sense. See the new dealer: GEM of Charleston,
