Email on Steroids: Xobni

When I attend conferences, I look for the WOW in the Exhibitor (vendor) booths, as well as the conference rooms. Xobni was one who provided WOW at Inman News’ Connect NYC 2009.

Xobni (Inbox spelled backward) is an Outlook plugin that displays a communication and social profile of the person contacting you. It’s like getting a dossier on the sender.

When you open an email, you’ll see the following in the sidebar:

  • the sender’s communication history with you, including past conversations and attachments
  • their social networks, such as Facebook and LinkedIn
  • their contact details, such as phone number
  • your conversations threaded (like Gmail does)
  • Skype button link to contact the sender
  • a scheduler link (see below)– Clicking the link opens a new email message pre-composed with your availability. You can change the suggestions or add your own, but it saves you the time of checking your calendar when you need to schedule a meeting.

Everyone who stopped at the Xobni booth to check it out, stood with mouths agape. It turns out we’re Big Brother. WOW indeed.

Hey Joseph - Xobni was a little confusing at first, but then was OK. My personal fave right now is Outlook Track-It. Have you tried that one? It downloaded a little toolbar that increased email handling. I can set reminders for followup e-mails for me and the recipient. Great so far.
  • Sounds worthwhile. I will check it out. Thanks for the tip, CJ.
  • Nice idea.
I wonder how long it will take Gmail to come up with something similar :)
  • It would be another reason to love Gmail.
  • Whew, yeah that does really feel like "big brother" for sure. I could see when that would be good, and I could see many times when I would not want all that stuff showing up for me. Very interesting though.....
  • I've been using it and like it so far.
  • Ahhh. But does it work with MS Exchange Server and iPhone> It looks like a real nice desktop application/plug-in.

Here's the other thing: Do I really want to integrate all my social networking sites with my Outlook?
  • If you integrate your social networking sites, you get this information on
the sender-- not sure if they get yours too unless they're using Xobni. But
you're right-- you still have to give it some thought.

I like it for the related emails from the folks in the same company, the
conversation & attachment history. The search is very good. They will be
adding notes soon which will be nice.
