Apture Rapture: Take Your Blog or Website to A Higher Level

WARNING: If you don’t think images add to the blog or website reader experience, skip this post.

I am not easily impressed. But I think Apture is a fantastic tool for blogs or websites. Use Apture to turn a flat page into a multi-dimensional experience. It provides a richer web experience and keeps readers on your site, instead of whisking them away on a link.

Simply put, Apture lets you add various media (video, audio, maps, photos, pdf docs, even PowerPoint presentations) and reference links (wikipedia) directly on your blog or website page— you don’t have to use your dashboard editor!

Here’s how it’s done: Just highlight a word or phrase, access the Apture editor, search for links and click a button to add them. Now, here’s the cool part— when a reader hovers over or clicks the link, it opens on the page to provide deeper levels of information. The reader can dive in as deep as they want and never leave the website or blog page. Amazing.

What I think is groundbreaking is the refocusing of the web link, making it serve as an enhancement to a page without being an exit off it. Apture also makes it easy for the technically unsavvy to embed multimedia into their blogs. Believe it or not, many folks don’t know about embed codes and how to add them to their website or blog. All they need do is search and click “add link”.

I used Apture on this post. Just roll over Eddie Adams to see the wikipedia entry, as well as video and Amazon book I embedded. All links within the new screens will also open on the page (screenshot below). All I had to do was highlight Eddie Adams, right-click to access the Aperture Editor, do a search and add the links I thought would add to the story. Easy.

Another neat thing about Apture is the ability to embed media between paragraphs. Roll over until a gray line appears. Click it and see the “Embed Media” button (below). Click to add other media.

On some YouTube videos, you can choose the time start, skipping any unrelated intro material.

Sign up and set up an Apture account for one or more of your blogs or websites. Access the Apture Editor by typing the letter e or using the Apture bookmarklet. The Apture Editor will appear like this on your computer screen (notice the Video tutorial):

Apture works with most popular publishing platforms, such as Worpress, Blogger and Typepad. You can add as many blogs or websites as you like to your Apture account.

Now, here’s a little test– which works better to get you excited about Apture– my wordy blog post or this video?

Try it.

I've seen this on many sites whenever I hoovered on a link but I never figured out what plug in or tool was used. Sometimes it can be annoying to have a small window open up in front of the text but other times it's quite useful.

  • On second thought, having taken another look at Apture, it's a very different kind of animal. Snap and Interclue both preview links, whereas Apture operates on words. I was thinking that the Apture popups were attached to real links, and previously I was clicking on the icons to get the popup, but then when I clicked on the _link_ it didn't go to a real page, that also launched the popup - it wasn't an actual link before Apture came along. I get it now.
  • Yup. It's not a preview. And it lets visitors dig deeper, while still on
    your site.
  • It's a nice implementation, but doesn't really break new ground per se. Snap has been doing this sort of thing for many months. And then there the Firefox add-ons, of which our own Interclue is the most similar to Apture. Our link previews aren't as pretty, but they do work on every link there is, once you've installed the add-on.
  • Wow, what a great recommendation. Thanks.
  • I really think Apture offers a great service. Send me a link if you try it.
  • I am curious to learn of applications folks are finding for Apture. Maps are certainly a useful one.
  • Joseph - another interesting and innovative tool. Look forward to learning a bit more - thanks.
  • Wow, this plugin is "loaded"! I tried to play with it last night and had to turn it off until I have a good feel about it. I think it can be a powerful tool for real estate agents in promoting their properties as far as Google maps are concerned.

    Great find Joe!

SEOing really is a needed component to website marketing. In SEO there are two components.
    White Hat: Good
Black Hat: Bad -- Black Hat is considered Spam and you will be banned from search engines.

From my expereince, here are some of the best ways to get Google to see your website.

    1) Give the link out to quality website bloggers you know to do link exchanges – or to bloggers to do a review.
    2) Participate in forums and chats and leave worth reading comments in articles – use your website as your signature.
    3) List your website on business cards & emails
    4) Use SMS Marketing (Text Message Marketing) such as DriveBuy Technologies and in the text message always include your web address.
    5) Let friends and associates know about your website
  • Apture provides a way to stand out from the competition. I imagine agents could enhance their property listings or profiles using Apture to add videos of the neighborhood, local news, maps, etc. If anyone does, could you drop me a note and a link. Thanks.

I look forward to future enhancements from Apture.
  • Hi Joseph,

Thanks for the fantastic post. We've really wanted to highlight that users can now embed media between paragraphs and link to a specific time offset on video.

In response to Vlad, Apture searches images from Flickr, Yahoo Image Search, and Wikipedia.

    Thanks!

  • Thanks Theresa,

Heading over to "snoop around" the Apture :)
  • Sounds like a great tool. I am using something similar to find images for my posts from flickr.com. Do you know as far as images are concerned what source besides Wikipedia does Apture uses?
