Never miss an update from your favorite websites. Here is an easy way to create an RSS feed from a website that does not have one. [ If you don’t know what an RSS feed is or don’t have a feedreader, read RSS for Dummies first].
Just insert the website URL into FeedYes and it will create an RSS feed for you. Then simply add it to your feedreader. Here’s the blow by blow.
First, Register at Feedyes.com. It’s free.
After you register and log in, click the link that says Create feed. It’s at the top of the page:
Next, click Get a feed for that website now.
You will be taken to the page below. Now, just add the website or page URL. The URL should be of the page for which you want a feed. Often, this is not just a homepage such as http://www.nytimes.com but a subpage that contains (specific) news, such as http://www.nytimes.com/pages/business. Now, click Get feed.
Almost there. What follows is a 4 step process which lets you review and edit the feed (you want to edit out static links). Just follow along. At Step 3 click Save feed. The result is the RSS feed link URL you can put into your feedreader (we use Bloglines) or just click “Click here for the rss link“. Either way, you just created a feed that did not previously exist. Bravo!
FeedYes also lets you create a feed for your own website. Go to Create a Manual feed.
FeedYes works for almost all websites. It does not yet work for sites using text such as “click here” to link instead of contextual tex. And it doesn’t work for Flash websites.
I created a feed at Homes & Garden and it does work. The only downside is you only get headlines. Supposedly Feed43 (link below) lets you customize the feed for a better result.
