Have you ever been to MARS? MARS is an acronym for “mobile augmented reality systems“. MARS is coming to a smartphone near you.
Layar is a MARS browser that lets you point your smartphone camera at the world and get an overlay of information about it, taken from web databases.
How do you use Layar?
Simply hold the phone in front of you like a camera and information will be displayed on top of what the camera sees.
Choose the layer you want to see– restaurants, transit, landmarks, tourist traps– and you see data displayed on your phone superimposed on real objects.
Layers are the equivalent of webpages in normal browsers. Just like there are thousands of websites there will be thousands of layers. One can easily switch between layers by selecting another via the menu button, pressing the logobar or by swiping your finger across the screen.
Layar is a free application for your mobile phone, available for the T-Mobile G1, HTC Magic and other Android phones in all Android Markets.
