Move Over GMail, Here Comes ZMail: Zimbra

Zimbra offers a host of useful browser based Ajax applications to help you slay that technology beast which saps your time and energy in the name of productivity— email.

I use Gmail but after reviewing Zimbra, I may send it to Zmail.

Here’s some of the cool Zimbra offerings:

  • easy calendaring from email
  • integration with Skype to make phone calls directly from email
  • integration with Yahoo maps (add other mashups, called Zimlets)
  • global email search, including attachments, with a save feature
  • threaded conversations
  • color coded tagging labels
  • get blog updates in a folder via RSS
  • Zimbra also connects to your Blackberry
  • it can also integrate the most popular email services, like Outlook, GMail.

Here are a few screenshots showing Zimbra features :

click a phone number and Skype opens

hover over a date and see your appointments- or right click to set up another.

set an appointment from email

multi calendar overlay shows conflicts

get contact info from sender

click an address and open a Yahoo map

Global Search email, incl. attachments

Blog RSS feeds

  • Zimbra was bought by Yahoo last fall--and could be the future Yahoo Mail. GMail is seamless with my Blackberry and Google Docs are pretty cool.

Doubt that Google is sitting by and letting Yahoo outcool them (at least I hope not).
  • I am trying Zimbra. It has a lot of features but I think GMail is faster.
