iPhone or BlackBerry Storm: Which is Better for Realtors?

blackberry-storm-v-iphone

Justin Zimmerman of BreakingGroundsLive needs to know something (don’t we all).

Justin sent me this email, which he said I could share with you.  So, read on and feel free to nominate yourself here as the expert to answer Justin’s  question:

Which is better for Realtors, the iPhone or Blackberry Storm?

If selected, you get to convince the rest of us on the GoodMorningRealEstate Live show.

Hey Joe,
Little known fact…
I’ve been taking technology stuff apart since I was 10 (didn’t always
get everything back together again LOL) and recently on I’ve been
asked to “pick apart” which is best for Realtors…
Blackberry or iPhone?
I have my favorite, but it doesn’t mean it will be your’s.
To end the debate once and for all, I’m organizing a live call (tba)
that will match up two Realtors to represent each phone and service.
FYI: iPhone is for AT&T and BlackBerry Storm is for Verizon.
This upcoming (tba) live call will answer these questions for you…
+ which one is compatible with MLS (ie: MLXchange)
+ how long will the battery last under “Realtor conditions”
+ which one takes the best property pictures
+ which has the best flawless data backup
+ which touch screen works for fat or jittery fingers
+ much does the service and hardware cost?
+ many more…
But 1st, help me nominate a winner!

Right now you get to “create” this call by nominating a Realtor you
believe should be featured in front over 10,000 agents as an expert
on this subject for the GoodMorningRealEstate Live show.

What to look for…
I’m looking for two Realtor Candidates who are raving fans of either
the Apple iPhone or BlackBerry Storm. All you have to do is go to
my blog and follow the nomination directions.
We all win!
Based on your nominations, I’ll be able to pick two agent to get on
the call and make it happen.

BTW, the call date is not set, but once I get all the pieces inline
you’ll be one of the 1st people I invite.
Let me know if you have any question and have a great day.

Excitedly,
Justin
(PS: I did nominate 2 folks to Justin)

  • This should be an interesting debate/face-off. I'm no expert by any means (even though I have fat, jittery fingers). I have owned an older version of the Blackberry (it was OK) and I own the iPhone now.

The iPhone touchscreen keyboard takes a little getting used to but the iphone eventually figures out what you're trying to type so that makes up for it, somewhat. The iPhone has way more fun apps. I use a MS Exchange Server service for "push" from my Outlook for e-mail, contacts, calendar and it works mighty fine.

I don't use a mobile MLS product although my local MLS is beta testing one. I hear battery life is poor but I've never had a problem. I think pictures are fine. service costs with AT&T is comparable to the service I had with Verizon and the signal (can you believe I still use it as a phone!?) is strong enough and wide ranging enough for me.

All in all, I really like the iPhone not withstanding the keyboard.

So, there, my non-expert, "regular Joe" review.
  • I cant use either! Our board uses Supra Lock Boxes that only open with an IR port. That locks us into Plam Products. Unless I want to carry another device- that defeats the purpose of a smart phone

    So I'm a Centro guy.
  • We also use Supra lock box system and it works with the infrared port of the TREO, which I have.
  • Update on the Blackberry. Turns out you can use these Blackberry's with a special fob to open the Supra boxes:

    Pearl
    Curve
    Pearl Flip
    Bold, 8800 series
    Storm

eKEY for BlackBerry will require the use of a small piece of hardware called the eKEY fob in addition to a monthly subscription fee. The fob will translate the Bluetooth in the BlackBerry to Infrared in the iBox. This piece is required because BlackBerry devices do not have an Infrared Port. It would also be required for an iPhone, but no one's invented an app for that yet.

    Get to it!
  • Supra is working on a fob for the iphone that is supposed to be ready in the next few months - the fob for the blackberry is still new. I really like the idea of the iphone and my friends who have them are huge supporters so it will be a tough choice when the iphone fob comes out. I currently use a treo, use it for mobile MLS and as a lockbox key. The phone works fine, just feels a little out of date and battery life is poor - less than 24 hrs.

For an iphone expert (Realtor) I nominate Robert Masse from Tampa - he's using the phone for video and tons of other things.

I have to use an eKey now since I don't use Palm products anymore, and my Blackberry handles Top Producer, but not all of them do (don't know if Storm does), and I'm certain the iPhone doesn't. There is no one good solution that meets all my needs in one device, but w/my B'berry at least I can keep it to only 2.

I wouldn't recommend either the iphone OR the BB Storm for real estate. BTW - the Blackberry photo at the top of this story IS NOT a Storm (see STORM here >> http://www.blackberry.com/blackberrystorm/photo... ) - it's a BOLD, which I WOULD recommend >> http://tinyurl.com/d6aw9s

The Bluetooth FOB to open SUPRA LBX is available from CREB in the Calgary market
  • Thanks for correcting me. I switched out the image.
  • I don't want a fob... i really want a box that uses BlueTooth.
Why stick us with IR Supra?
    Sorry to derail....
  • I have the iphone but would love to hear about the new black berry-for example can you cut and past with it-you can't with the iphone
    How is it for music?
  • @ken
I used to have a black berry and a treo-both were superior for typing emails than the iphone I now have because of their tactile keyboards.
The browsing on iphone is superior as is the screen size and shape
  • I have the Black Berry Curve. I waiting a long time for the Storm but found there was a problem with the touch screen keys. The picture resolution was wonderful. Since I wanted to stay with Verizon, I ended up with the Curve. I think the BB Bold would be great as I do like the keys. As far as the iphone goes, I have heard wonderful things about it, but it won't forward to an optonline.net account.

Does anyone use Top producer with the Blackberry Storm? Am only considering it becuase of my contacts in Top Producer. If you have Top Producer and you use an iPhone, what are you doing for your contact database in the iPhone?
