Many a vacation home or getaway is located by the ocean. But before you buy or rent, you should check the water quality to determine its desirability for you and your children.

Here are some useful links to websites where you can learn more about the quality of the beach you choose to be near and the corresponding quality of the experience you will have.

These are non-profit organizations concerned with beach quality and management who regulary evaluate and certify beaches as clean.

National Healthy Beaches Campaign (NHBC)
Clean Beaches Council.

NHBC rates beaches on water quality, sand quality, safety and services and environmental management. Clean Beaches Council is concerned with beach management to maintain water quality and to prevent erosion of beaches.

Other useful sites include:

EPA Beaches -check your beach for quality issues, advisories, closings etc. On their site go to Find your Beach.

National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) issues a great comprehensive Testing The Waters annual report on vacation beaches which includes threats to specific beaches, water quality & monitoiring schedules. The site’s Beach Buddies and Beach Bums names beaches that do not regularly monitor their water-da Bums.

See you by the sea!
