Power Kites to Generate Electricity

power-kites

Scientists at the Delft University of Technology (Netherlands) think they can create more electricity from the wind than the traditional windmills — by using power kites. A recent test of a 10 square meter kite generated 10 kilowatts, enough to power 10 homes.

These wind catchers hope to send a bunch of kites called the Laddermill up to 30,000 feet in order to generate nearly 10 megawatts of power– enough for 100,000 homes.  Holy hot air, Robin!

  • Another innovative idea that surely will benefit not only the citizenry but also the environment.
  • Interesting that the idea came from the Netherlands, home of the windmill.
  • WOW - very, very cool. The kite just runs and spins a generator. I've hung under a kite like that and they really pull. This energy technology stuff is just fascinating.
