15. Baidou: China’s Google

Baidou ( pronounced by-DOO) owns China search. It crushes Google and Yahoo. The name was inspired by an 800 year old poem. The poem compares the search for a retreating beauty with a search for one’s dream despite life’s many obstacles. Romantic search—now that’s appealing. Read the Baidou story here. NASDAQ just listed the company IPO last month, igniting a buying spree by investors who had flashbacks to Google’s IPO.

Robin Li and Eric Xu created Baidou in 2000. The name literally means “hundreds & thousands of times”.

The company runs the risk of government intervention because it allows access to gambling and pornography, both banned in China. Robin & Eric obvioulsy spent a lot of time on Google.
