Extremely rare artifacts, dating from the early 1600’s, were discovered yesterday by archeologists in a centuries old well in Historic Jamestowne, a national park in Virginia. The finds included a Scottish pistol, leather shoe and lead plaque reading “James Towne”.

The Virginia Colony in Jamestown is historically regarded as the first permanent English settlement in America (1607) to survive. No one knows what happened to the Lost Colony at Roanoke Island, off the coast of present day North Carolina. The oldest European settlement was 42 years earlier in St. Augustine, Florida, settled by Spain in 1565.
