Sellsius Blog Predictions for 2009

The problem with the future is it keeps turning into the present ~ Bill Watterson

Last year’s predictions here.

The 2009 Sellsius Crystal Blog Ball says:

1. The pressure on certain group blog owners to pay their contributing writers will increase. Blog owners who do not compensate their writers (money or leads) will find most of them posting far less or going elsewhere. The cries against real estate portals for riding the backs of real estate agents’ listings and their content for profit will be turned on the fat dogs cats using contributors’ content to build their own house brand, which they will parlay into ticket sales for dog and pony shows to line their own pockets (and not the contributors). Blog owners will try to appease their writers by giving them more praise, awards and widgets. Some will be up on hind legs in appreciation, while others will jump the fence.

2. Twitter will be acquired and users will be asked to pay for some sort of premium service. The new owners will offer the Influencers a free ride to keep the masses from jumping ship. Most users will not pay (or follow the so-called Influencers) and instead, move to a new microblogging site which will be “just like Twitter was, but without the whale”.

3. “Paid reviews” will continue to rise. There will be a standard disclosure to the effect “Hey, folks, I’m getting paid for this review.” Those writers who are not asked for their reviews will point their paws and bark their disapproval.

4. As a backlash against transparency and lack of privacy, “cleaner” companies will offer to erase you, and your comments, from the face of the internet.

5. A complaint will be filed against a Realtor blogger for violating the NAR Code of Ethics, Article 15 with a blog post attacking another Realtor with accusations of bribery, corruption, and stealing ideas from famous musicians.

6. Companies will continue to hire bloggers as social media gurus to spread the good propanganda news and patrol the webwaves for negative comments and blog posts (someone’s got to whitewash the web graffiti). The job title will be referred to as SMS (Social Media Spinologist).

7. A blogger talk show will make it to cable. It will have a novel format.

8. More real estate real estate agents will put on Marketing and Social Media Conferences to make the money they can’t make selling houses. Tickets will regularly be put “on sale” so folks will wait ’til the last sale, and then not go.

9. A Blog News Paper will make it to print. It will be printed on old yellow newspaper stock (because it’s the cheapest) and handed out free at bus stops, subways and train stations. It will be supported with advertising and property listings.

10. Communal blogger rental spaces will pop up in New York and other cities to provide work spaces to bloggers, whose mates complain they’re blogging too much and should instead be out rustling up some real business.
