Cafe Real Estate Refill

Back in 2007, Foxtons opened innovative cafe style offices in the UK.

They had ginormous Gaggia coffee makers, steel fridges filled with Perrier sparkling water and hip Italian furniture. Very cool. Foxton’s coffee went cold and the company closed its doors.

What’s old is new again.

Cool office for agents. But to bring in the consumer, you might need something a little hotter than coffee.

    Joe,

In 2003, I tried to get the management at Coldwell Banker to approach our corporate decision makers on pursuing a local partnership with Starbucks for space next door while our new office was being finished in a strip shopping center in Franklin Lakes, NJ. My Office and Regional Managers thought it to be an interesting idea, but didn't want to engage corporate on it, siting lack need ,since we were sitting near the anchor grocery store, and questionable ROI. Fast forward this story 4 years later, Starbucks opens in a somewhat remote location on the south end of town next to a beauty salon. The place is packed on the weekends with little room to sit and ongoing traffic during the week. What we wouldn't give in this slower market to have that traffic walking by our front door now. Hindsight can sometimes be a kick in the rear and a lesson in "be proactive - sometimes you just have to do it yourself". Thanks for the interesting article.

  • Right. That kind of piggyback marketing makes a lot of sense. You were
obviously ahead of your time, Becky.
  • Joe,

Thanks for your latest updated on efforts to marry coffee, cafe, and real estate. Did you see this article in the NYTimes, published January 2008?

  • Back to 2001 ING, an online bank, opened a Direct Cafe branch in Philadelphia. They also have one in NYC. http://tinyurl.com/dhxcnr
  • I do see office diggs changing. The starbuck's atmosphere is coming to the real estate office atmospheres.

In the past I would rather meet a client in a Starbuck's or Panera rather then in a stuffy office.
