Any method that removes a 'pest' without actual harm is a good one. I know of one factory that had a seagull problem, they would nest on the roof. The solution? They used to simply open up the vents on the roof so the eggs / chicks would fall the their death. Sad but true, thankfully that particular place was prosecuted and is no longer around.

Large plastic owls seem to work as well.

Noticed some gardeners have made use of old CD's tied in sequence then and hung in appropriate spots. On sunny day's the benefit is rainbow sparkles eminating from the veg patch.

Red Rider always seemed a good non-green solution except for the side effect of replacing the neighbours windows. :>)

Ive used bird-b-gone products on my roof, the "bird spikes". They worked great, and they do not hurt birds, they just take away their ability to land in the spot you place them. My brother in law was having bird problems on his boat, and is using one of the solar repellers with good success!
