The NAR Made A Dog An Offer He Couldn’t Refuse: A Trademark He Could Pimp

The true hypocrite is the one who ceases to perceive his deception, the one who lies with sincerity ~ Andre Gide

I read this post over at the Animal Farm blog and had to laugh.  Here’s a fellow who regularly accuses the NAR of being a criminal organization and hopes NAR’s new Social Media Director, Todd Carpenter, “will discover he has made a terrible mistake and quit this job with dispatch”.

This advice comes from a paper tiger mafioso hitman who brandishes the NAR’s powerful trademark to consumers, and pushes his assorted alphabet soup of NAR designations to strong arm clients into paying, for their own protection, a card carrying graduate of the Realtor Institute, criminality and conspiracy notwithstanding.   Holy crap in a hand basket.

Look, man, if you believe this is a criminal organization, why are you  pushing their dope to the public.  Perhaps you ought quit with dispatch.  And don’t give me that two wrongs don’t make a right turn hooey.

This seems like a good place to rerun the following post from 2007, originally titled NAR Bashing or Some Hot Air Bloweth: (I have embellished where the whim moved me).

realtor-nar-hot-air.gif

I am not a member of NAR.  But I’ve noticed one of the hounderati bashing them big time, wanting to replace their logo with anything from a Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval to a People’s Choice Award. This anarchist- objectivist even wants to abolish state licensing; he says it’s a criminal conspiracy by the government. Oh, brother!

gripe1

I certainly stand up for this rabid rouser’s right to complain and advocate change. Heck, there may some basis for his gripes (except for the conspiracy theory. That’s either Oliver Stone hype or naivete.) But what’s a morally principled, yet disgruntled, real estate agent to do about it?

I say he  should honorably and loudly quit the NAR gang.  Why not? (I hear they gave up stomping folks when they passed the Code of Ethics). He claims he does not need the vendors or the NAR– that the  Brave New Web 2.0 World has unchained him to do business without the Boojum. Oh really? Methinks your foam runneth over. In other words, I call “bullshit”.

Truth is — besides cashing in on the NAR brand and designations, he does need the NAR for the MLS access and will pay the Man his dues to get it, like a good little pup who wants to be fed.  It’s completely understandable and easy enough to rationalize.

BUT there is one thing I don’t get.

If this fellow advocates NAR’s overthrow (via supplantation), why does he promote the NAR brand on his website and advertise his NAR affiliate designations? Why does he call himself a Realtor (in listing presentations? signs) instead of just a licensed real estate broker? Why promote the criminal brand you bash?

Could money have something to do with it? Surely you are capable of earning a living without having to pimp the NAR brand.  Perhaps one should compromise his principles for a buck and a bone.  Principles ought not get in the way of pay checks — if the criminals give you a living, you might as well take it.  So bark the good bark and feel better, Sir Windbag.  But we’ll expect to see you again on the street corners flashing the mark of the harlot.

It’s a travesty of a mockery of a sham of a mockery of a travesty of two mockeries of a sham. (Fielding Mellish, Bananas)

As an outsider, it looks like you are peddling the NAR brand, Mr. Swann to get listings and clients.  Some might call that a tad hypocritical.   Hey, I don’t care, I have no stake in the NAR.  It’s your choice to use the NAR trademark to hustle business.

realtor1.jpg

You joined the club. But, unlike a motorcycle gang member, you DON’T have to wear the NAR colors. That’s YOUR choice. You are not required to admit your membership in the shady club.  You publicly call NAR a blood sucker. Might you be the one sucking in clients, using the NAR brand as bait? It’s easy to bash NAR when you use them to pay your bills.

A Moral Imperative: Drop the NAR trademark

Lest you think me harsh in my opinion of your moral hypocrisy, I offer you a principled solution— which makes this post, in the end, one of constructive criticism.

If you are indeed serious about your beliefs and want to convince others you are serious — then truly take more than a standtake action. Talk is cheap. Put your money where your dog chow is.

realtorlogo Big bark, no bite.

Take the NAR logo off your site and don’t use it, or its designations, in your advertising or listing presentations. If you don’t believe in the value of the brand, don’t push it to dupe consumers. If you think NAR is a cartel, divorce yourself from it, in spirit, mind and body.   For your good works, wearing the NAR colors, only serve to build the NAR brand in the eyes of your clients.

If the designations are bogus, don’t bullshit the consumer by flashing them. Don’t accept the blood money the vampire (your term) takes from the unsuspecting public (your terms). Stop cashing in on the Realtor cachet. That would get my attention. Not only that, it would also bring attention to your cause. You’d probably make the evening news. Then maybe you could effectuate real change (instead of chump change). Otherwise, it’s all just hot air. And I have no problem with that either. You can’t float your balloon without it.

NAR may be broken, but as a card carrying member, you might also consider taking an active leadership role to create change from within. Unless, of course, you believe you can do more from the comfort of your air-conditioned blog soapbox.

And the gauntlet is thrown down.
  • Ooooh fun, This should keep me busy the next couple of days!
  • I have to admit that I have really tried to become a fan of Gregg's blog. He occasionally has guest contributors that are interesting to read - insightful and lucid. For the most part, it's the Gregg show with an overbearing tone of self importance and patronizing gobbledygook.

I stopped trying to follow the thing.

Some days it seems that he's suffering a nervous breakdown with his aimless and disjointed meanderings combined with a William F. Buckley vocabulary that let's his readers know, in no uncertain terms, that HE is BETTER than YOU.
  • Oh my....this is rich.

This line is ridiculous and is hall of fame: "Then maybe you could effectuate real change (instead of chump change). "

Epic point-counter point views, Batman/Joker, William Wallace/Long Shanks, Andy Dufrense/Warden Norton, Maximus Decimus Meridus/Commodus style.

It's as plain as nose on my face. Bravo.
  • Pop Corn time!
  • I give him a beautiful opening to come here and defend himself but he is not used to debating in an open forum.
  • well done. I see the word "evil" is again being used in the hound howelings about NAR. Being intentionally affiliated with evil is not a good thing at all. I thought the hounds standards were so high and that he was saving the unwashed masses from evil but it looks like I was wrong.
  • Apparently, the fella would rather give up Amazon nickels than the spoils of NAR evil.
  • Holy Crap in a handbasket! No dictionary necessary to understand the point being made here. Good straight talk.
  • ROTFLMAO...
  • Hypocrisy on Bloodhound? I'm stunned.

The almost constant barrage of advertising for their conference, while in the same breath slamming Inman Connect and other "vendorsluts" (they charge for their conference, hello? They ARE a vendor), the personal attacks while putting on some air of moral superiority, the self-proclamations being a supreme being, all this and more is all but a constant barrage of hypocrisy.

But, in Greg's defense, he just about HAS to be a member of the NAR. In our neck of the woods, one can not get access to the MLS unless they are members of their local and state associations, and the NAR. An agent without MLS access simply won't make it in this market.

So I understand why Greg is a member of the NAR.

However, clearly there is no requirement to place and promote the NAR alphabet soup after one's name. For that matter, you aren't even required to use the word "realtor" in your marketing material. Most of those NAR sponsored designations require annual dues to be paid. And for what? The real estate buying public doesn't know what they mean and likely wouldn't give a rat's ass if they did. The primary benefit I hear most people spouting is that you get listed in the designation's directories and can get referral business. That and you can stroke your own ego with a string of important looking stuff after your name.

Whoop-tee- freaking-do. Personally, I find that the internet makes a pretty good directory. And I've built up a pretty good referral directory of my own by getting to know agents all across the country. Having ABR, CBR, CRS, e-PRO, GRI after a name doesn't mean someone is a good agent. Pull up 10 random "e-pro" designees web sites. I'll betcha a commission check that at least half of them aren't worth a flip. Yet these are "e-pro's"

I'm not bashing continuing education, it's important. I've also certainly not been a poster boy for the NAR, but I'm not calling them evil and criminal. And if I did feel that way, I certainly wouldn't pump any more money into their coffers than I absolutely had to and I wouldn't flash their designations around in my marketing material.
  • Hmm.. the NAR is a criminal organization but their brand is useful in getting me business... let me think... OK, no moral dilemma here. Hypocrisy and greed make good bed partners.

Here's a guy who dropped Amazon ads because he felt it "might" give the appearance his writing could be compromised (I know, absurd). He also refused to speak at Inman because his appearance would show support for something he did not believe in (but throw in an honorarium, and he'd rethink his position). His logic is crystal clear-- if big money is at stake, he'll make an exception.

I thought I'd been rid of the hounds when I deleted them from my RSS feed a while back. Not that I don't love a well turned phrase, I just found the ego and venom to be overwhelming, Honestly, the hounds are not the only brokers who strive very hard to take care of their clients. They have no corner on that market. I also really resented their claim to superiority in marketing their clients' properties when I discovered that, at the time, they had less in closed income in a year than one should strive for in a good month.
Still, there are plenty of comments warning you of certain retaliation. Seems people love a good food fight. Personally, all the ranting seems so web 1.0, and I wish the hounds would just stay on the porch. All the howling in our Realtor neighborhood is lowering the property values.
  • "I wish the hounds would just stay on the porch" Yes, a well turned phrase.

For the most part, I've come to ignore the whinings of that misplaced Realtor (IMO, he wished for another profession, which is OK) but it's the hypocrisy in his moral elitism that ruffles my feathers every now and then.
  • As a NAR member for a few decades I see the benefits of what it does. Many people bash NAR because they they are not educated enough or understand the benefits. HIs he bashing because of the good things NAR does or the money he spends as a member?
  • My guess: Greg Swann doesn't like paying NAR, except for the education,
which gives him the influential alphabet soup designations he can use in his
marketing. He likes the power of the Realtor brand & designations to
influence consumers. The NAR does good work. Does it have its
flaws/problems-- of course, who doesn't? But a criminal org. must have the
INTENT to commit bad acts. That accusation is ignorance of criminality or
madness of the frothiest kind. My guess: both
  • Is the movie over already? I just got my popcorn and candy!

I think Greg and you should debate at RE Tech South instead of me... I'm willing to yield my slot.

  • The man only debates on Animal Farms.
  • I agree with Jay, you won't find BR, CBR or CRS ANYWHERE on my site. (If you do, please let me know and I'll remove the remaining fragments of years past). They're absolutely worthless if you ask me.
