The Secret to Getting More Subscribers to Your Blog

Click me

Want more subscribers to your blog? Don’t ask them to subscribe! Huh? Why? To the non-blog savvy reader, the word “subscribe” is usually associated with the payment of money. Change the word and you might increase your subscribers. Want proof?

Willy Franzen, in this Copyblogger post, changed the words and immediately increased his blog subscriptions by 254%! Willy changed it to “Get Jobs by E-mail” and “Get Jobs by RSS”.

Consider what your blog is about and change the words. Maybe simply adding the powerword “free” will make a difference.

It is also important to make the subscription boxes and RSS icons large and easy to spot at the top of the page. (see this example)

What words do you use to get subscriptions?

  • The last name is actually Franzen, but thanks for linking to the post!
  • Corrected. My apologies Willy.
  • Great point. I've taken your advice, my sidebar now reads FREE News Updates as opposed to Subscribe via: ..... big difference.... speaking of RSS Icons, I've created some free real estate ones, my name links to them....
  • wow thanks, great point have been made. I might just follow and get some good rss subscribers and nice picture btw
  • Nice icons Trace! I'm using the orange house.

Good luck roshan. I wonder if Mr. T will get me subscribers (I linked him to my feed)?
  • Been using an above-the-fold header on my blog for the past year. It's a non-intrusive attention grabber and it works.

My subscriber base doubles every six months.
  • Interesting..

I think those that use RSS will know "subscribe".

However, email is a different story. I just changed the standard Feedblitz to "Free Updates by emai".Changed the button text to "Update me!"
  • PS: love Trace's icons, I've been using the orange house too...
  • Jay

Right. Now the question becomes, do most consumers/ transactional visitors (the readers that become clients) use RSS? My guess is not yet. So perhaps it is better to make more prominent the "Free Updates by email" option for the benefit of these readers.
  • A word like click me surely does not make it clear enough what it is for , you might even try "learn more" or " learn via email " - what do you think ?
