Unusual House of the Day: Clingstone

Perched on a rock in the middle of Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island for the past 103 years sits Clingstone mansion.   Built by J.S. Lovering Wharton in 1905, with William Trost Richards, the 23 room house is three stories high.  Wharton built the home after the Feds took his land in Jamestown, RI, as part of Fort Wetherill’s enlargement.  “I’m going to build where no one can bother me,” he said.

Locals were skeptical of how long Mr, Wharton could survive the isolation & weather (and occasional cannon blasts from the Fort).   But J.S. loved the home and stayed there every summer until his death, just before the hurricane of 1938, which Clingstone survived with little damage.  His widow died in 1941 and the house stood vacant for 20 years.
Clingstone is currently owned by Henry Wood, a Boston architect, who has kept it virtually intact since buying it in 1961 for $3,600.
