Top 100
The top 100,000 that is. We’re now 78,825 42,922 39,197 30,975, 28,106 26,348 21,545 19,916 15,792. It’s news of sorts because we started at 1 million. But was it fair to entice you into linking to the post & reading past the headline? Maybe not, but it was only done as an experiment to try to prove a point.
Today, one of our favorite bloggers, Brian Clark of Copyblogger wrote How to Get 53% More Readers for Every Blog Post You Write. Brian’s advice, always dead on, is to be as specific as you can in your headline since according to the 80/20 Rule of Headlines although 80% will read the headline copy, only 20% will read past it. This makes the headline the key to readership. So we put Brian to the test with this headline.
Now I must admit that we broke one of Brian’s cardinal rules which says that you still must deliver the promise you make in the headline— but it was done in the name of copywriting science. Mea culpa.

Uhhh… I’ve got Elliot Spitzer on line one?
Yes I did get sucked in by the headline. But i always do. Doesn’t everyone?
Your headline got me. Congratulation on the top 100,000 and a good headline… I read the whole thing. I was amused not disappointed by being lured in.
