The album artwork from Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention’s We’re Only In It For The Money (Verve 1968) parodied the hugely popular & commercially successful Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the Beatles’ album of the previous year. We’re Only In It For The Money satirized contemporary culture and fad following youth. Original song lyrics were censored to protect the innocent.
So, what does this have to do with Mothers’ Day? Originally nothing. I just enjoy Zappa’s music and figured “Mothers’ Day, Mothers of Invention”. But as I wrote the post, I thought “Well, has Mothers’ Day become (or was it intended to be?) a commercialization of a day meant to honor the beauty, devotion and sacrifices of motherhood.” Let’s hope not. Happy Mothers’ Day Sandra, Sara and all the mothers who read this.
