Can’t Pay Your Property Taxes? Work it Off

There are novel programs to help folks who have trouble paying their home property taxes. In more than 100 communities across the United States, local municipalities are hiring homeowners 60 and older to work for the town. Their wages, some of which are tax free, are directly applied to the homeowner’s property tax bill.

These programs help people on fixed incomes keep their homes in the face of rising taxes. New York’s Westchester county, home to the third largest property taxes in the nation, is trying to get the program approved. It is already being used in South Carolina, Colorado and Massachusetts.

  • Nice - this is the first I've heard of such programs; it seems like a great concept. Instead of just giving people a break and costing everyone money, they can work it off in their communities. These programs have my vote.
  • It is an interesting concept and if it can help defray the cost of property taxes for those on fixed income, I'm voting yes too.
  • This is the first I have heard of this, but I think it's great! Property taxes have always bothered me. Their very existence means that you never really own your home. I would prefer to do away with property taxes altogether, but this is a great step in the right direction.
