Last Of The Clams

John works in the mortgage banking business. We’ve been friends for 35 years. Every Summer, and into the Fall, John & I go clamming in Shinnecock Bay, Long Island, NY. We leave before dawn to catch the morning low tide. We wade through the channel under the Old Ponquoque Bridge to get to the musseled mud flats. Inches below the surface lies our treasure, the Mercenaria mercenaria, or hard clam, class Bivalvia (all that Latin talk was for Greg’s benefit). As we rake up our bounty, we catch up on our lives and rake up old times. This is a piece of my life away from the screen. What do you like to do when you’re not working?

PS: Since Southampton is a beach town away, I went to visit Michael Daly & his wife Barbara, at their new office. Michael writes the Hamptons Real Estate blog. I left them 2 dozen clams and the briny aroma of Shinnecock Bay. Hey, what are friends for?

Our day always ends at Scotto’s: prosciutto, mozzarella, basil on focaccia. Bellissima.

My pleasure Michael. You live in a beautiful, tranquil place. Great success with the new office. It’s gorgeous.

I wish there was a Scotto’s in Kingman Arizona… damn.

Todd, if you’re ever in NYC, I’ll treat you to a nice Italian meal.
I know how you feel. When I lived in Houston Texas in the late 70’s I pined for a good slice of pizza.
