The Biltmore Estate, completed in 1895 is America’s largest private residence. It was built for George Washington Vanderbilt III. It has 250 rooms comprising 175,000 square feet. Each room is named after an artist or work of art in Mr. Vanderbilt’s collection. The house was designed by Richard Morris Hunt, who designed the pedestal for the Statue of Liberty. Frederick Law Olmstead, architect of New York’s Central Park designed the landscaping.

Did you know that the famed Vanderbilt fortune was created by Cornelius Vanderbilt, known as the Commodore, who was born in the Port Richmond section of Staten Island. It all started with a ferry boat service between Staten Island and Manhattan. More Trivia: Cornelius is the great-great-great grandfather of journalist Anderson Cooper.
