Craigslist Community Censors Post

Saw this on digg today.

It seems a graphic designer was voicing his opinion on Craigslist ads that solicit artists to work for little or no compensation. When I went to read the post, it was missing. It was “flagged down” (censored?) by the Craigslist community.

While Craig Newmark is a rabid free speech advocate and he allows virtually ALL contrary, even abusive, speech in his forums and posts, he let’s the community censor. Is this a good thing? What is your opinion on community censorship? If the community can do it, why not Craig Newmark himself? Is there a difference between owner censorship versus censorship by the community as a whole? Is it any different in the blog community?

If you want to read the post that got the Craigslist community in a fascist mood, it can be found in this blog post on positon:relative.

    So much anger….

No, seriously. It seems as if everybody wants something for nothing these days. I wish I could say that there is no parallel to Real Estate, but the cheapos are everywhere wanting quality service for scanty commission.

I like to think of myself as a Real Estate artist

I think there is more to the topic… purging criticism by craigslisters (http://craigslistcriticism.blogspot.com/2007/01/are-they-purging-criticism-by.html), for instance, or doing away with inconvenient info (http://craigslistcriticism.blogspot.com/2007/01/truth-is-staff-is-overwhelmed.html) seem to be flying in the face of free speech claims… D.

Good question Delia. Maybe Craig can clear this up.
