World Trade Center Plaza, also known as the Austin Tobin Plaza, featured the symbolic steel and bronze sculpture known as “The Sphere” (pictured above), created by German artist Fritz Koenig. The 22.5 ton work, although damaged in the 9/11 attack, survived virtually intact. Koenig’s “beautiful corpse” was moved to Battery Park and dedicated as a memorial on March 11, 2002. (picture below). An eternal flame was lit on September 11, 2002. (Source: Wikipedia)

As Koenig’s friend and translator, filmmaker Percy Adlon, noted, “they found intestines of one airplane inside a hole that was ripped open in the top of the sculpture. They found a bible in there, an airline seat, papers from offices on the top floor.” (Source: NYCJPG.) Adlon completed a documentary called “Koenig’s Kugel” in 2002.
