According to Hitwise, a online traffic measurement company, here’s what’s hot.
The top News and Media Industry websites as of March 2007 are:
1. Yahoo News, accounting for 28.13% of visits (down 3.8%)
2. Weather Channel, 4.75%
3. CNN, 3.95%
4. MSNBC, 3.86%
5. Google News (this and following websites are all below 2%)
6. Yahoo Weather
7. Drudge Report
8. USA Today
9. The New York Times
10. Fox News
Some interesting findings:
- Most traffic to these sites comes from search engines and portal front pages
- Topix, a local news aggregator and community website increased its market share 81% over the past year. It is especially popular in Kentucky, South Dakota, North Dakota, Arkansas and Indiana.
- Digg readers are young tech-focused males (60%), 18-24 years of age (31%). The site is not a significant source of traffic to the News and Media industry.
- Gossip news increased substantially in the past year. Visits to the top 20 celebrity blogs doubled. The top 2 celebrity gossip news sites were TMZ.com and PerezHilton.com
- Those leaving News and Media sites are going to Entertainment and Multimedia sites, like YouTube, whose market shared increased 764% the past year, jumping to the #12 most visited website and #1 in the Entertainment industry.
