Senior playgrounds are public places where older folks can keep fit and have a little fun. They are being built in China, Finland, and Germany, among other places. So what do they have for these big kids?
Well, there’s outdoor chess, petanque, bocce, putting courses, climbing, horseshoes, and that old standby shuffleboard. Outdoor adult playgrounds in Beijing have walking and rowing machines.
The benefits, of course, are available to all ages. The idea of ‘generational play‘ was developed in Finland. Research by the University of Lapland showed older people benefited from participating in activities with children in local parks. It helped improve their dexterity, balance and coordination.
Studies show older adults would take advantage of at least one of these activities. [Interestingly, real estate bloggers were found not to play well together and required supervision.]
