Hurricanes, earthquakes, tornados, catastrophic floods and other natural disasters target certain cities more often. The 50 largest US cities were rated for risk by Sustain Living, with help from Risk Mangement Solutions. They looked at frequency of disaster and extent of damage.
The 10 riskiest cities are:
1. Miami, FL (Nature’s perennial least favorite son)
2. New Orleans, LA
3. Oakland, CA
4. San Francisco, CA
5. Honolulu, HI
6. San Jose, CA
7. Los Angeles, CA tied with Houston, TX
8. Long Beach, CA
9. tie: Tulsa, OK, Oklahoma City, OK & Columbus, OH
10. Sacramento, CA
Knowing this, you can expect your insurance costs to be higher in these cities. See the entire list of 50 cities here. Read the comments for some further insight into the list such as the fact that St. Petersburg, Tampa & Corpus Christi would be among the most riskiest but they aren’t on the list because it only ranks the largest cities.
Here are the cities at the bottom of the risk chart & less likely to make Mother Nature angry:
50. tie: Mesa, AZ & Milwaukee, WI
49. tie: Cleveland, OH, Tucson, AZ, Phoenix, AZ & El Paso, TX
48. Colorado Springs, CO
