Common courtesy is the oil that keep’s society running. Reader’s Digest did a study on courtesy in 35 major cities around the world.
The Test Criteria: Based on 20 instances, 1 point awarded for each kind act. Maximum score of 60.
- Enter a public building behind someone & see if they hold the door for you
- Buy item in various stores & see if they say “thank you”
- Drop a folder of papers on a busy street & see if someone stops to help.

Certainly, cultural differences play a role on how people interact in public and the poll is only based on 20 cases and is not scientific. What if the test was conducted in the US. Would the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia, be at or near the top? Regardless of any test or list, none can dispute that courtesy is an important part of business and personal life.
