Writing blog posts is time consuming when you have to go back and forth between blogs and other websites to research a topic. How do you navigate and write? Do you use bookmarks? Open new windows? Use a split screen? Sidebar extension? I have used all of these. But the best, by far, is tabbed browsing. It makes researching and writing your posts fast and easy.
The main advantage is easy “one click” navigation from one site to another. The tabs are easy to see. Just click a tab and you’re at that resource. Click a tab back to your dashboard to continue writing. Click another tab to a blog, tab back to the dashboard to write. You get the idea.
Here’s how to do it. Click “File“. Then “Open New Tab“. Type in a URL or simply click a bookmark. Click Go or Press Enter. The Tab for that blog or website is now set up (and you’re on the site). Want another tab? Go back to File, Open New Tab and type in another URL, Go. Bingo, another tab. Create as many tabs as you need. Of course, you’ll want a tab for your dashboard to write the story. Now you can click back and forth between tabs to quickly write your post. With tabbed browsing your work will be done sooner and you’ll have more time for other pursuits. Now if I could only remember some other pursuits.
To close a tab, click it (it becomes highlighted), then click the small red “x icon” to the right of the last tab.
Want to replace a tab with a new site? Simple. Click the tab and insert the URL of the new site. Bingo, the tab is updated with the new site.
NOTE: If you exit a tabbed site by clicking the big red x box at the top right hand corner of your screen (for Windows), you’ll see the message “You are about to close # tabs, do you want to continue?” Click “cancel”. Unless you really want to close all tabs, click the small red x box instead to close just that 1 tab. Happy blogging.
Availabilty Note: Tabbed browsing started with Apple’s Safari browser, and spread to Netscape and Firefox, but is currently not available on Internet Explorer v.6 (which most readers may use). You are absolutely right Matt. Apple is the origin of much useful functionality which, over time, is adopted by others. I use Firefox & often forget IE is still king of browsers.

Tabbed browsing, combined with OSX’s Exposé is the perfect solution for both blogging and untreated ADD.
