Top 12 Women Real Estate Bloggers – 2008 Edition

Yes, it’s that time again.

The women selected for Sellsius‘ 3rd Annual Top 12 Women Real Estate Bloggers for 2008 were chosen for their exemplary efforts in publishing local consumer-centric content across multiple channels, building their brand identity, awareness and trust and, most importantly, for their community involvement and service, both online and offline.

Thank you to all these ladies, and those I have overlooked, for continuing to raise the bar for real estate professionals seeking to improve themselves and the profession in service to the public. You are glowing examples for those who are to follow.

1. Mary McKnight. Netamorfasis. Also known as REBlogGirl. Previously, we had only chosen real estate agents for the Top 12 list. It was time for a change. (Heck, there are umpires in the Baseball Hall of Fame.) And the first non-agent I want to honor for recognition is Mary McKnight. She has been giving real estate bloggers valuable tips and insights into the mysterious art of blogging for business for a long time. As long as computer bots are crawling blogs, SEO & SEM have to be part of the blogging equation.

Mary has also been known to stir up hornets’ nests and not run away. She has been able to stand out from the madding crowd and build her brand with bravery, a key to success in any medium.

2. Nicole Nicolay. MyTechOpinion. NikNik, Nicole has shown that geeks can be excellent real estate bloggers. She is always on the lookout for new technology and tools to help real estate professionals stay ahead of the curve. She was an early adopter of video blogging. Nicole is also tuned into the microblogging crowd at Twitter.

Nicole was recently named by Inman News as one of the Top 25 Most Influential Real Estate Bloggers. Nicole has teamed with Mary McKnight in a most sacrilicious way to launch a new marketing blog. These ladies mean business.

3. Kelley Koehler. MyTucsonBlog. As the Housechick, Kelley has taught real estate agent bloggers to win the small battles and go niche. Kelley represents the best in local blogging, keenly focused her market, Tucson, AZ. I think her post Getting the Most out of the Listing Router should be required reading for real estate agents. A classically trained ballet dancer with a Systems Engineer degree makes for quite a range of talent.

4. Lani Anglin-Rosales. Lani keeps it local for the Austin, Texas market at SinglePointeRealty Blog. She can also be found on ReRevealed. Lani is also one of the resident agent geniuses at AgentGenius. Darn, how does she do it? With husband Benn, she took the group blog concept to new heights, gathering the best collection of real estate bloggers on the net to win an 2008 Inman News Innovator Award. Lani was also named by Inman News as one of the Top 25 Most Influential Real Estate Bloggers in 2008.

Lani is the consummate networker and has been known to use that ancient piece of technology, the telephone.

linda davis

5. Linda Davis. Eastern Connecticut Real Estate Blog. The Carnac of Connecticut. I love Linda for her straight shooting style. Linda is a frequent public speaker on blogging. Who can forget her quote from Inman Connect San Francisco, “If your business is crappy, blogging won’t help.” Linda preaches service to the client as the essence of being a real estate professional. Linda takes service seriously. She is currently on the Ledyard, CT Town Council as Chairman of Land Use and Planning Committee. Linda was also selected as “Outstanding Woman of Ledyard” by the Ledyard Jaycees. Local and involved in her community, she is outstanding in my book too.

lenn harley

6. Lenn Harley. Lenn blogs the way I like to read them– direct and to the point. Her posts are scannable and easy to read— and understand. Jakob Nielsen would be proud. And Lenn blogs her listings, contrary to the wisdom of some. I like that she goes her own way. Lenn is a conversational marketer, using her comments to stamp her brand across the net. Lenn is a buyer agent evangelist with Homefinders.com. She has blogged with Real Town and Active Rain. Lenn is a great model for new bloggers.

7. Mariana Wagner. Colorado Springs Real Estate Connection. Fer shizzle Mizzle. If you want to know anything about Colorado Springs, read Mariana’s blog. (I think I would move there). She sports the tell tale signs of a McKnight styled blog– focused on the consumers’ needs and wants, with clear calls to action. I think she has one of the best About Us pages I’ve seen. I’d hire the Wagner team in a second.

8. Sherry Chris. Clean Slate (Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate). Sherry is CEO of Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate, a progressive brand which combines nuts and bolts real estate advice with lifestyle features. I had the pleasure of interviewing Sherry at a RISMedia event in New York and found her to be committed to social media. She is one of the most respected leaders in the industry (including the male of the species) and can be found speaking at virtually every major real estate conference in the country. That she has embraced blogging shows her understanding of media trends. What I especially admire about Sherry is her commitment to charitable causes, even those which may seem out of reach.

ginger wilcox

9. Ginger Wilcox. Marin Real Estate Guide. A third generation real estate professional, Ginger specializes in residential real estate in Southern and Central Marin County. Besides being very active in the blogging community and social media, Ginger is also devoted to community service. She currently serves as Provisional Education Chair for the Junior League of San Francisco and is an Executive Vice President on the Board of the Kentfield Schools Foundation. Ginger chaired the award winning Junior League of San Francisco Home Tour, Give My Regards to Broadway in 2006 and has worked with a variety of other community organizations including Marin Family Service Agency, Booker T. Washington Community Service Center, TALKline and many more.

10. Cheryl Johnson. NELALive. Another keepin’ it local, tech-savvy blogger from Los Angeles, CA. Open Houses and Market stats are blog staples, along with all things related to her neighborhood and community. Heck, reading NELA makes you feel like a native. Cheryl also contributes to the Active Rain community and Bloodhound blog.

11. Heather Elias. Loco Musings. Heather blogs for the Loudoun County, Virginia community. She is well versed in using social media. A testament to her popularity and social media networking skills was her campaign to win the Virginia Association of Realtors’ 2008 Blog Brawl. Getting to the top locally is what it’s all about.

12. Bernice Ross. LuxuryClues. Bernice has devoted herself to helping real estate professionals improve their business. Writer, coach, speaker and blogger, Bernice owns a Ph.D. and the rank of Emeritus Professor of Psychology, Los Angeles Pierce College. She now has a Sellsius Top 12 to add to her trophy case.

Congratulations to all.

  • Congrats to all the women bloggers especially my idol Laurie manning. We can learn alot from these women.
  • Congratulations Ladies... A lot of smiling faces, good tips and technique…
  • Kelly Koehler's Phoenix Arizona Real Estate Blog is a perfect example of a real focused and localized blog that works. It almost has too much information. I believe the localized blog more than anything has to appeal to sellers, and if you run into any purchasers along the way, that's bonus.
  • I so appreciate having role models to learn from - thanks to these bloggers (as well as several others who didn't make the short list) who have broken ground and shown us the variety of ways we can blog about real estate successfully. Congratulations to you all!
  • Great List! Congrats to all the wonderful women bloggers; I have learned from each of you. Thanks for keeping it real for everyone.
  • Report today on Facebook that Mary McKnight (REBlogGirl) just got kicked off ActiveRain and all her posts deleted. She exposed some douchebag Realtor and got booted off. Shame on ActiveRain for supporting the wife-beaters and their enablers instead of the victims!
  • Linda is wonderful. Tell her I said hello :)
  • I have work by many of these bloggers. They do a good job.
  • I had no idea so many real estate ladies blog! I follow Linda cause she's in my area. Glad I stumbled upon this, now I have so much more online reading material.
  • Linda is wonderful. Tell her I said hello :)
  • How did I miss this? Congratulations to all.... I feel like I know many of them. Great bloggers. I love that Lenn was named...
  • Thanks for branching out to include those of us that enjoy supporting RE pros with helpful resources and training! It's been a fun ride so far, especially learning from YOU along the way! Here's to rockin' the RE net in 09!
  • Great bunch of bloggers.

    A belated congratulations to all.
  • Kris Berg was in our 2007 Edition. How can anyone overlook Kris?
  • You overlooked Kris Berg :(
  • Great list. Thanks for sharing. Each one does something different that stands out. I would have also added Fran Thorsen or Ines but there is only room for 12.
  • Both Frances and Ines were named in last year's list. Each year a diffferent
group of women is recognized. This way, more women have the chance to be
celebrated. Think of it as the Sellsius Hall of Fame-- once you're in,
    you're in.
  • Oh good grief, where ~~are~~ my manners??!! A belated thank you very much for including me in this list!!
  • You are most deservedly welcome, Cheryl.
  • rainmakertom
These talented dozen have rightfully been chosen as the best RE Women Bloggers for 2008. Their excellent work is followed even here in Bulgaria. Wish them all the best in 2009. Expectations are high. New heights and more !!!
    Congratulations and Best wishes,
    Tomislav Savov
  • RobertaMurphy
Kudos for recognizing, once again, the talent behind some very awesome real estate blogs. A big congratulations to all!
  • I regularly read and have met almost all of the women mentioned here. They are all phenomenal bloggers and I am honored to be affiliated with them, and the fabulous honorees from previous years as well.
  • Thank so much what an honor to be among such other great bloggers and thanks for the shout out to my rebellious ways. I am a fighter and I love stirring up hornets nests online!!! Congrats to all the other winners especially my partner in crime @Nik_Nik / NikNIk/Nicole Nicolay.
  • Now this is great, What an inspiration to all of us.. Thank You
  • EricaMuller
All of these women are brilliant and incredibly talented!! Great list!!!!
  • What a nice surprise. Thank you for making me a part of such an awesome group of bloggers.

Since beginning my blogging adventure in 8/2006, blogging is fully integtated in my marketing plan and brings many rewards.

  • Congrats to the ladies. Wow.

    Bloggeratti....love it.
  • Talk about a great list of female bloggers!!! Congrats :)
  • sueforlou
It would be interesting to see how much these 'authoritative' bloggers actually sell. I know two folks on the list that claim to be full-time real estate agents but sell next to nothing.

Does a seller or buyer really want to work with a blog saavy agent that sells far less then his or her colleagues?
  • A blog savvy agent is probably web savvy, in the sense they know how to use
the online marketing channels and are aware of new technology, tools and
trends. This might be an edge for a seller. They may also be better
equipped to engage & represent the new online consumers, which also includes
    buyers.

Yes, you have to decide for yourself and blogging is just one factor.
  • Another great list. Good job, all!
  • Congrats to all these great ladies, all well deserving. Bernice and Sherry are the only two I haven't read. Looking forward to reading them.
  • Audrey Forshey
Awesome choices. Love their stuff, congratulations to all the winners.
  • Great choice congratulations ladies.
  • Met a few of them but read them all. Kudos to Joe and nods to the women. And its just opinion but I think the world is a better place with Jay Thompson NOT being a girl.
  • Congratulations Ladies...
  • A great list Joe! Congrats to these expert bloggers.
  • Great List! Congrats to you all!
  • An honor, good sir. (love the scuba pic at the end...)
  • My pleasure, dear lady. Loved your scuba pic and wanted to end the show
    with it. Perfect.
  • Carrie L
All good choices I am sure but you left out my favorite: Phyllis Harb posting at losangelesreblog.com. She provides accurate and thoughtful advice and is an integral part of the local real estate community. I really appreciate her home buying and selling suggestions she is a true expert.
  • Absolutely speechless! I am so honored to be included...Congrats to all the ladies on the list, many of whom I count as my friends!
  • I am humbled Joe that you would think to include me in this awesome group of women. Congratulations Ladies, and to all female bloggers who take the time to provide insight and value within our industry...
  • You are the real deal, Sherry.
  • Well done, Joe. Great list and my congratulations to everyone!
  • Yeah! Congratulations to all, but I have to give a special w00t! to VARbuzz Blog Brawl champ, Heather!
  • Congratulations to all of you!! What a great list of people to emulate and learn from!
  • I am really distressed that I didn't make this list, Joe :(
  • Congratulations ladies, enjoy your year in the spotlight.
  • This is a wonderful list and I have met quite a few of them, so they live outside my computer as well as in. You have a great eye for talent:)
  • Some of my most favorite people are on this list! I'm gonna miss the honor (sniff - sniff) but I love you Joe and a lot of these awesome women! CONGRATS!!!

    Ines.
  • NatalieLangford
Congratulations to the winners named 2008's top female bloggers! What an honor to receive this award, huh? It's nice to see so many faces I'm familiar with. I love their work and their personalities. Now, where's the guy list? It'll be no easier narrowing it down to 12 than it was for the gals.

  • Great group of bloggers ... lots of thoughtful and fun blogging. Have a great holiday!
  • I am in the company of the most excellent woman on the Blogosphere. I am so honored to have them in my computer.
  • Thank you for the very nice tribute Joe! I think you are pretty outstanding too!
  • Congrats to all the ladies! There are some super people in this list.
  • Great List ... perhaps one day I can aspire to be just like them :)
  • Of course. Every year a new group of wonderful women are added.
  • Outstanding group for sure! These women bloggers have set an excellent example for others to follow.
  • And to think I didn't even bribe you!

Thanks for branching out to include those of us that enjoy supporting RE pros with helpful resources and training!

It's been a fun ride so far, especially learning from YOU along the way! Here's to rockin' the RE net in 09!!!
  • Congrats to all those great bloggers!!

  • Congrats.
  • Great list Joe, of some fabulous bloggerati.

Almost makes me wish I was a girl.

Did I type that out loud?

As with any list, there will always be criticisms. My only thought would be to expand to 13 and add Kris Berg.

    Congrats to all!!
  • Kris was in last year's list.
    http://tinyurl.com/38bhrf
  • But if course. Didn't realize it was a "no repeat" list (an idea that I like).

I'm still looking for that "Girls of RE Blogging" calendar.... ;)
  • Joseph,

You've highlighted an outstanding slate of women real estate bloggers here. They're all tops in my book.
  • What a well-researched article — thanks for putting in the time to look into the back-stories of all these famous brands. I had no idea the Twitter bird came from iStockPhoto, of all places!
