Dying To Move In: Cemetery Skyscrapers

We discovered Italian Dumas from BLDG blog. We subscribed and found something quite interesting—the vertical cemetery. That’s right. The internment of loved ones in condominium style buildings is evidently sweeping Brazil and spreading.

The Memorial Necrópole Ecumênica III, a vertical cemetery in Santos, Brazil (above) is the world’s tallest cemetery, with burial spaces on 32 floors. There’s also a restaurant, chapel, lagoon and peacock garden. It has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Santos.

Here’s a peek inside. Looks like a nice place to visit.

The cemetery does not discriminate based on religion. Everyone is welcome, so long as you’re dead.

The Panteon Vertical Memorial Towers (below) will be a 13 tower complex in Bogota Columbia.

    ok, just a little explanation of why such a vertical cemitery.
    Santos city, settled in 1546 on an island, with only 108.2 sq mi. Being this island shared by a another city.
    With a population reaching the 700 thousand people,
    its 3 cemiteries were definetely not enough. For being an island, with no more free space to locate a new cemitery, the only solution was creating a vertical cemitery, with the possibility of increasing more and more floors, accordingly to the "demand of the market".
    In fact, the status was being the tallest cemitery structure in the world was never intentional, it simply happened to be.

    quite interesting building .. and also i would like to know, by burial what does it means? does the building has soil/ground in it for burial or is it just a crematiorium? please let me know..thanks
