Stop Twitter Spam Followers Using TrueTwit

stop twitter spam

TrueTwit is a service designed to validate your new Twitter followers to see if they are human (not automated bots) using the CAPTCHA system.

By signing up now for free, all of your new followers will get a validation notice via direct message. If they too are TrueTwit users or pass the CAPTCHA test, you get an email indicating they are a TrueTwit validated human!

Interesting.

  • I really can't figure out what's the point of this service. You're not blocking spammers, you're only blocking yourself and alienating followers.

Spammers who FOLLOW YOU aren't the real problem. The real problem is spammers that YOU FOLLOW. If you don't follow back they can't send you DMs, and you're not seeing their stream anyway.
So by using TrueTwit you risk alienating real people who want to FOLLOW YOUR tweets but don't appreciate that idea that they have to prove something to you first, and you gain nothing in terms of spam prevention.

Think about it this way: it makes sense to user caller ID so you can filter out unwanted calls, but would it make sense to require people you call to identify themselves before you talk to them? It's you who called...
Your followers receive your messages, not vice-versa (unless you follow back).
  • Yes, Elad, I agree-- it's the ones you follow who can spam DM you. If you can identify the spam bots and don't follow them back, then you avoid spam DMs. And even if you miss one, you can unfollow later. So, TrueTwit may indeed alienate human followers. But, as I commented to Lani, for those who auto-follow, TrueTwit might do the vetting for them. Perhaps you should be allowed to edit the message box before the CAPTCHA. You could have it read something like this-- "Sorry to have to ask you to fill in this dumb box but I read on Sellsius that it was meant to stop DM spam. If I insulted you, go over to Sellsius and complain." :)
  • Yeah, all I can see happening is the losing out on some great tweets from totally radical awesome people like me that are pissed off at the mere site of captcha and the condescending nature of someone with 200 followers thinking I care so incredibly much-as Lani said- to "prove myself" to them. Oh, and if they don't follow me after that...fuggettaboutit.
  • The first time I got a TrueTwit link via DM, I assumed it was a scam like the other 50 scam DMs I get every day.

The second time I got one, I decided not to click the link but to visit TrueTwit to check it out and of course learned it was a legitimate service.

See, I have a private account, so by me allowing someone access to me and following them back, I've already gone through an informal vetting process of my Twitter followers. That said, my ultimate feeling was that of being offended. Who the crap do you think you are to immediately make me prove myself to you? Not even a "hey" or whatever? I reserve the right to change my tune on this over the years, but right now it feels rude, inhuman and craps on the core fundamentals of social media, so I'm not on board because I already vet.

What do you think about it, Joe?
  • I see your point.
(I have noticed that followers in human form can still spam you.)
I have run across TrueTwit when trying to follow someone but did not take it personally.
Here's where TrueTwit might be useful-- for those who autofollow-- that opens the door to DM spam from the bots.
  • But I must confess, with the number spam-turds that hit me DM, it might be time to use this tool.

I've seen this in action with someone I followed. At first I was annoyed that I had to take an extra step, plus of course, I was thinking, "Huh, am I real, hell yeah I'm real." Like I said, "Maybe I should."
