Unusual Home Conversions


Home conversions are creative adaptations of existing non-residential structures. Here are places that were called something else before they were called home.

Church conversions are very popular in the UK. This English chapel home has lovely windows and high ceilings. You pray the electric bills are not hell to bear.

From self-defense to self-expression, a missile silo home conversion makes for interesting conversations.

Homes that float. Converted canal boats (narrow boat) are England’s floating RVs.

Homes that road the rails. “The Centennial” railcar conversion is located in Yellowstone National Park. It’s currently for sale.

This converted windmill home in England has a nice porch view. The big outdoor fan should keep you cool on hot days.

Someone even converted the peak of a skyscraper tower. It’s called the Lighthouse and it was the work of Castanes Architects. The view is surely unzillowable.

Begun in 1910 and completed in 1914, it was one of the first skyscrapers. It was the tallest building west of the Mississippi for 50 years.

There’s no place like home, 35 stories up. The owner saves on the observation deck fees. The pyramid was formerly used by a caretaker, reportedly named Jack Torrance, who later took a job in the country.

For some reason, hobbit home conversions have not caught on.
