Yeah, right. Didn’t Dave Liniger set you straight on this? Not only did the zestimate compete with the foot-in-the-door CMA, it told the public, in essence, they really didn’t need a CMA, or an appraisal— (I know David G will object, but just think about it– why give a value– and then say “doublecheck it with a CMA or appraisal”? Doesn’t make any sense.) Well, it was no surprise the real estate industry called Zillow a carnival act and refused to pay even a brass razoo to advertise on it. For us, the joke is the zestimate beside the list prices on the search results page and also on the individual listing page, albeit below the fold. It’s not funny that owners, and their agents, have no right to prohibit inaccurate information, especially as to value, on their listings. If you truly want to help real estate agents and owners, acknowledge this right and give them the option to remove or hide it from view. Marketing and selling real estate is no place for frivolity. If I want entertainment I’ll go to the carnival. […]

Zillow scraped public data (free and copyright free), sprinkled some special sauce over it and told everyone to come look at what they made. And people did. And why not? And like a carnival act, once they saw the show, they walked out and didn’t come back. To get them back, Zillow let owners fix what was broken. Now owners had a reason to come by. To look at THEIR value, not Zillow’s. So far so good. […]
